Answers to common questions

What is a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist?

A maternal-fetal medicine specialist (MFM) is an OB/GYN physician with advanced training in managing high-risk pregnancies.

MFMs focus on medical, surgical, obstetric, and genetic conditions that may exist before pregnancy or develop along the way. If a fetal abnormality is detected on ultrasound, an MFM can help guide next steps and provide specialized care.

Common Conditions We Manage

Many women benefit from MFM care when their pregnancy involves added complexity. Some of the most common conditions include:

  • High blood pressure (chronic or pregnancy-related)
  • Diabetes (pre-existing or gestational)
  • Twins, triplets, etc.
  • Other chronic health conditions that may affect pregnancy outcomes

How MFM Care Works

MFM involvement looks different depending on your needs. Some women see an MFM just once for a consultation. Others are followed throughout pregnancy alongside their primary OB. In certain cases, care may be fully transferred to an MFM.

We are committed to providing the best possible prenatal care—before, during, and after delivery—for women facing higher-risk pregnancies.
